The Short Answer
A newspaper insert suits a vet clinic, pet shop, grooming salon or boarding kennel because pet care is local: owners pick a clinic or a groomer within a short drive of home. Drop an A5 sheet with your services, prices, hours, vet's name and a WhatsApp number in the pin codes around you, before the Christmas and summer holiday bookings. Fifty thousand A5 copies cost ₹60,000 plus GST.
Key Takeaways
- Pet care is a near-home decision. Owners choose a vet, a groomer or a boarding kennel they can reach quickly, so a pin-code insert matches how the customer actually chooses.
- Plan around the holidays: a drop on Saturday 28 or Sunday 29 November 2026 for Christmas and New Year boarding, a January drop for vaccination and health-check packages, and a late-April drop for summer boarding and grooming.
- Only some households keep a pet, so an insert reaches many homes that will never respond. Choose the localities where your clients already live, and consider sharing a run with non-competing pet businesses.
- The sheet that brings owners in shows each service with its price, the vet's name and registration, real hours and emergency cover, the boarding vaccination rules, the address with a landmark and a WhatsApp number.
- Fifty thousand A5 copies cost ₹60,000 plus GST. On the general 0.5 to 2 percent response band we observe, that is 250 to 1,000 enquiries, or ₹60 to ₹240 per enquiry, and a pet category should plan around the lower end.
Why do newspaper inserts work for pet businesses?
Digital ads can find a pet owner anywhere. The insert finds the owner who lives close enough to become a regular, and three things make that matter.
The catchment is small. A dog owner will not drive across the city for a nail trim or a vaccination, and nobody wants a long ride to an emergency vet. Most clinics, groomers and pet shops draw regulars from a few neighbouring localities, which is exactly what a vendor network can deliver to. Our pin-code targeting guide explains how to choose them.
Trust decides the choice. Leaving a pet at a boarding kennel for ten days, or handing it to a groomer, is an act of trust. A printed sheet with a named vet, a registered address and photographs of the real facility gives the owner something to keep, check and show the rest of the family before booking.
Pet care repeats. Vaccinations, deworming, grooming every few weeks and food every month make a pet owner one of the most repeat customers a local business can have. One owner won from an insert can be worth years of visits, which is why the first booking matters more than the cost per enquiry alone.
Across the campaigns we have run since 2020 in 30+ cities, the pattern we see for neighbourhood service businesses holds here too: enquiries arrive in a burst on the morning of the drop and over the following two or three days, so the phone and WhatsApp must be staffed from the first hour.
Who should use a pet-care insert?
- Veterinary clinics and pet hospitals announcing vaccination drives, health-check packages, a new branch or extended hours.
- Grooming salons and mobile grooming vans building a regular base in a set of localities. Our salon, spa and gym insert guide covers the appointment-filling pattern, which carries over.
- Boarding kennels, pet day-care and pet sitters filling the holiday weeks.
- Pet shops and pet-food stores with home delivery inside a radius.
- Trainers running weekend puppy classes in a park or a society.
It is a poor fit for an online pet pharmacy that ships nationwide with no local service. A national product launch is better planned as a multi-city brand drop, which our FMCG and D2C launch guide describes.
When should a pet business drop an insert?
Work back from when owners book, not from when the flyer is ready.
Late November, for Christmas and New Year boarding. Families who travel over the winter break look for boarding and pet sitters weeks ahead, and good kennels fill early. A drop on Saturday 28 or Sunday 29 November 2026 lands after Diwali (Sunday 8 November) and before the December rush. Our Christmas to Republic Day window guide explains how crowded the later weeks get.
January, for vaccination and health-check packages. A drop on Saturday 9 or Sunday 10 January 2027 suits a clinic announcing an annual vaccination and check-up package for the new year, or a new branch.
Late April, for summer boarding and grooming. School holidays bring a second boarding season, and warmer months bring demand for grooming and tick and flea care. A drop on Saturday 24 or Sunday 25 April 2027 catches families planning May and June travel.

Which pin codes should a pet business cover?
- Start with your own records. List the pin codes your current clients live in. Those localities are proven, and their neighbours are where you will grow.
- Stay within a short drive. For a clinic or groomer, the localities within about fifteen to twenty minutes respond better per thousand copies than distant ones. A mobile groomer should map the localities on its route.
- Favour housing with pets. Independent-house localities and large apartment societies that allow pets tend to hold more pet owners than commercial or hostel areas. Ask your own clients where they live before assuming.
- Split by branch. A clinic with two branches should run two clusters, each with its own address and phone.
Pet ownership is spread across metros and large cities. Our city pages for Bangalore, Pune, Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad list the editions and localities we cover.
Because only some households keep a pet, a 50,000-copy run reaches many homes that will never need you. Two businesses that do not compete, such as a vet and a groomer, or a pet shop and a boarding kennel, can split one A4 sheet into panels. Our guide to shared and co-branded insert runs explains how to split the cost.
What should a pet-care insert say?
Answer the questions an owner asks before the first visit.
- Each service with its price. "Vaccination from ₹X", "Bath and trim, small dogs ₹X, large dogs ₹X", "Boarding ₹X per night". Prices printed by size or weight stop the first call being a negotiation.
- Who treats the animal. The vet's name, qualification and registration number build trust in a way a logo does not.
- Real hours and emergency cover. Print "24 hours" only if a vet is actually on duty through the night. If you refer emergencies elsewhere, say so.
- Boarding rules. Which vaccinations you require, whether dogs are walked, whether there is a vet on call, and whether owners can visit before booking.
- One offer with a deadline. A first-grooming discount or a free check-up with vaccination, valid until a printed date. Our guide to coupon inserts covers design and tracking.
- The address with a landmark, parking and a WhatsApp number that answers the same day.
- Photographs of the real facility, not stock images of animals you have never treated.
Our guide to designing an insert people keep covers type size and layout, and a pet-care sheet is one that owners pin to the fridge.
What rules apply to pet-care advertising?
- Treatment belongs to a registered vet. Under the Indian Veterinary Council Act, 1984, veterinary practice is limited to registered veterinary practitioners. A grooming salon can offer a tick and flea bath, but diagnosis and prescription medicine should be advertised only by a clinic with a registered vet.
- Pet shops register with the State Animal Welfare Board. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pet Shop) Rules, 2018 require pet shops to register with the State Animal Welfare Board and set conditions for housing and selling animals. Printing the registration number reassures owners.
- Dog breeders register too. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Dog Breeding and Marketing) Rules, 2017 require dog breeders to register with the State Animal Welfare Board. A sheet that sells puppies without a registration is a risk to the advertiser.
- No unsupported claims. Under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 and the Central Consumer Protection Authority's Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements, 2022, claims such as "100 percent safe", "vet approved" or "best clinic in the city" that you cannot back up are misleading. The ASCI code requires claims to be substantiated when asked.
- Check local registration rules. Many municipal corporations require pet dogs to be registered. A clinic can remind owners of this, but should not imply it can issue a licence it does not issue.
Our healthcare insert guide covers the wider rules on clinic advertising.
Which format and budget suit a pet business?
A5 at ₹1.20 per copy is the default for a single clinic, groomer or kennel. It holds a price list, hours, the vet's name, the offer and a WhatsApp number. Fifty thousand copies cost ₹60,000 plus GST, all-inclusive of printing, insertion and transport. The A5 newspaper insertion page gives the specification.
A4 at ₹1.50 per copy suits a pet hospital with several services or a shared sheet. Fifty thousand copies cost ₹75,000 plus GST, or ₹37,500 each when two businesses share it.
A2 at ₹2.00 per copy is rarely needed, except for a large pet expo or adoption event. Our A2, A4 and A5 comparison sets out what each size holds.
Rates exclude GST, and the 50,000-copy minimum applies per run. Current rates are on our pricing page.
How much does a pet-care insert cost per enquiry?
No pet-care response benchmark for newspaper inserts is published in India, and we do not have one to offer. The general band we observe across campaigns with a clear call to action is 0.5 to 2 percent of inserted copies producing a direct response. Because only some households keep a pet, a pet business should plan around the lower end. For one 50,000-copy A5 drop at ₹60,000 plus GST:
| Response | Enquiries from the sheet | Cost per enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 percent | 250 | ₹240 |
| 1 percent | 500 | ₹120 |
| 2 percent | 1,000 | ₹60 |
Scenarios on the agency's general 0.5 to 2 percent response band; not a category benchmark.
These are scenarios on the agency's general band, not a category benchmark. Judge the drop on bookings and repeat visits, not on calls alone. Our cost per lead guide shows the calculation.
How do you measure a pet-care insert?
- Give the campaign its own WhatsApp number, printed only on the insert. Our missed call and WhatsApp guide covers the setup.
- Code each pin-code cluster with a QR code that opens a pre-filled message. Our QR tracking guide explains how.
- Ask at the front desk. One question, "Where did you hear about us?", separates the insert from referrals and search.
- Track for sixty days. Count first visits, boarding nights booked and second visits. A groomer's real return shows in the second and third appointments.
- Check delivery first with the distribution certificate before judging the response.
Pet-care insert checklist
- Pick the booking season, then book the drop two to four weeks ahead of it.
- Map the pin codes your clients live in, then the localities within a short drive.
- Print services with prices, the vet's name and registration, hours, boarding rules, address and WhatsApp.
- Remove every claim you cannot prove, and print the State Animal Welfare Board registration where it applies.
- Choose A5 for one business, a shared A4 for two.
- Track first visits and repeat visits over sixty days.
