The Short Answer

The five weeks from Christmas (Friday 25 December 2026) to Republic Day (Tuesday 26 January 2027) are not one season but four short windows: the Christmas and New Year break, the Kharmas lull in the North, the Sankranti and Pongal peak around 14 and 15 January, and the Republic Day sales plus the school admissions rush. Each has its own buyers, and the best insert plans book one drop per window rather than one drop for the whole month.

Key Takeaways

  • The window runs Friday 25 December 2026 to Tuesday 26 January 2027, with Kharmas from about 16 December 2026 to 14 January 2027, Lohri on Wednesday 13 January, Makar Sankranti on 14 or 15 January depending on the panchang, and Thai Pongal on Friday 15 January 2027.
  • Kharmas pauses weddings, housewarmings and new-vehicle deliveries for many Hindu families in the North, so December is the month to book and brief, and the second half of January is when wedding, property and vehicle inserts land.
  • South India does not observe Kharmas the same way. Pongal is the regional peak, and Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka see their strongest January buying in the week before 14 January.
  • Republic Day is the first big retail event of the calendar year. In 2026 the two largest online marketplaces opened their Republic Day sales on 16 and 17 January, and offline electronics and furniture retailers run their own sales in the same ten days.
  • The school admissions rush overlaps the whole window. Delhi's private school nursery applications for 2026-27 ran from 4 to 27 December 2025, with the first list on 23 January 2026, and most CBSE and state board schools open their next-session admissions between December and February.
  • Rates are the same in every week: A2 ₹2.00, A4 ₹1.50 and A5 ₹1.20 per copy, all-inclusive of printing, insertion and transport, GST extra, with a minimum of 50,000 copies per drop.

Why treat Christmas to Republic Day as a separate insert window?

Because the usual festival planning guides stop at Diwali. Our own festival season planning guide carries the verified 2026 dates from Ganesh Chaturthi to Christmas, and most advertisers treat 25 December as the end of the year's buying. It is not. The five weeks that follow contain a holiday period, a religious lull that ends on a fixed date, two regional harvest festivals, a national holiday that the electronics trade has turned into a sales event, and the busiest stretch of the school admissions calendar.

Those events pull in different categories at different times. A furniture retailer, a wedding caterer, a school and a travel operator should not drop in the same week, and a single "January offer" insert for all of them wastes copies on readers who are not buying yet. We have run 500+ insertion campaigns since 2020 across 30+ Indian cities, and the briefs we receive in late December are almost always too early for some categories and too late for others. This guide lays out the window week by week so that the drop lands when the household is actually deciding.

What are the exact dates from Christmas 2026 to Republic Day 2027?

The anchors below are verified against published panchang listings and the civil calendar. Festival dates that depend on the sun's transit can shift by a day between calendars, so confirm with the panchang your target readers follow before printing a date on the sheet.

Christmas 2026 to Republic Day 2027: the anchor dates
DateEventWhat it means for inserts
Wednesday 16 December 2026Dhanu Sankranti, start of KharmasWeddings and housewarmings pause for many Hindu families in the North
Friday 25 December 2026ChristmasLong weekend; travel, dining, gifting and Christian-majority localities
Friday 1 January 2027New Year's DaySecond long weekend; resolutions, fitness, courses, annual sales
Wednesday 13 January 2027LohriPunjab, Haryana, Delhi and the Hindi belt; sweets, winter wear, family gatherings
Thursday 14 or Friday 15 January 2027Makar Sankranti, end of KharmasMost calendars list 14 January; Drik Panchang lists 15 January for New Delhi because the transit falls after sunset. Weddings, property and vehicle deliveries reopen
Friday 15 January 2027Thai PongalThe South's harvest festival, centre of a four-day celebration; gold, appliances, clothing, home
Tuesday 26 January 2027Republic DayElectronics and furniture sales, patriotic-themed retail offers, school events

Two things stand out. First, Republic Day falls on a Tuesday in 2027, so there is no long weekend attached to it; the sales run across the preceding weekend of 23 and 24 January and spill over the holiday. Second, Sankranti and Pongal fall at the end of the same week, which makes Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 January the natural drop days for anything tied to them.

How does Kharmas change the December calendar in North India?

Kharmas is the roughly month-long period when the sun is in Dhanu rashi, running from Dhanu Sankranti on 16 December 2026 to Makar Sankranti in mid-January 2027. During it, many Hindu families in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and the surrounding states avoid weddings, engagements, housewarmings and other mangalik ceremonies. Our wedding season planning guide covers how this splits the winter wedding season into a November to mid-December half and a mid-January to March half.

For inserts, Kharmas is a booking window rather than a dead month. Families who could not fix a date before 16 December are planning for the dates that open after Sankranti. That means:

  1. Wedding categories brief in December and drop in January. Banquet halls, caterers, decorators, bridal wear and jewellers get the best response from a drop in the first full week of January, when shoppers start buying for the late-January and February dates. A December drop reaches the same families, but they are not yet ready to spend.
  2. Property possession and griha pravesh move to after 14 January. Builders with ready-to-move inventory often hold handover ceremonies for after Sankranti. A possession-ready insert in the second and third weeks of January meets buyers who want to complete before the financial year ends. See our note on launch versus possession-ready campaigns.
  3. Vehicle deliveries bunch up after Kharmas. Dealers who booked vehicles in the Dhanteras to Diwali window and families who wait for an auspicious date both look to mid-January. Our automobile dealership guide covers the delivery push brief.

None of this applies to categories that do not depend on an auspicious date. Schools, coaching institutes, electronics, furniture, travel and restaurants sell straight through Kharmas, and the Christmas and New Year weekends are among their best days of the year.

Which categories buy in the Christmas and New Year weeks?

The two long weekends of 25 to 27 December and 1 to 3 January carry a specific set of advertisers. From our campaign records, the briefs that work in these two weeks share one trait: the offer has a date attached and the household is at home to read it.

  • Travel and hospitality. The Christmas break is the biggest leisure travel window of the winter. Resorts, tour operators and city hotels running New Year's Eve events should already have dropped by mid-December, as our hotels and travel operators guide explains. A last drop on Saturday 19 or Sunday 20 December catches late planners.
  • Restaurants, bakeries and cloud kitchens. Christmas and New Year dining is one of the few windows where a restaurant insert pays for itself on a single weekend. Park Street in Kolkata, Brigade Road in Bangalore and the Christian-majority localities of Mumbai, Goa, Kochi and Mangalore read Christmas offers closely. Localities matter more than city here, so pin-code targeting is the first decision. Bakeries planning Christmas hamper pre-booking should see our sweet shop and bakery gifting guide.
  • Electronics and appliances. Year-end clearance sales run from the week before Christmas to the first weekend of January. Winter appliances such as geysers, room heaters and blowers sell on cold mornings in the North, and a Saturday drop in the coldest week typically outperforms the same drop a fortnight earlier.
  • Fitness, courses and personal services. New Year resolutions are real, and gyms, yoga studios, language and skill courses and diet clinics see enquiries spike in the first week of January. Drop on Saturday 2 or Sunday 3 January, while the resolution is fresh; our salon, spa and gym insert guide covers the offer sheet and the pin-code ring.
  • Winter wear and home textiles. Blankets, quilts, woollens and thermal wear peak in the second half of December across the North. A regional-language sheet in Hindi for the Hindi belt tends to outperform English for this category; our guide to Hindi dailies for inserts covers paper choice.

The weekend rule applies throughout. Readers spend longer with a Saturday or Sunday paper, and a holiday morning paper is read by the whole household at once. Our best days for newspaper insertions guide explains why, and the reasoning holds doubly on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, which both fall on Fridays in this cycle and open three-day weekends.

When does South India's Pongal peak, and who buys?

The South does not pause for Kharmas in the way the North does, though Tamil families avoid the month of Margazhi (roughly mid-December to mid-January) for weddings. Instead, the January peak is Pongal. Thai Pongal falls on Friday 15 January 2027, with Bhogi the day before and Mattu Pongal and Kaanum Pongal following. Makar Sankranti is observed the same week in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu declares a run of public holidays around the festival.

Pongal buying is front-loaded. Households buy new clothes, gold, kitchen appliances, two-wheelers and home improvements in the ten days before the festival, and the week itself is for family visits and travel to native places. For an insert, that means:

  • Drop on Saturday 9 or Sunday 10 January 2027, or at the latest on Wednesday 13 January, before readers leave for their native towns. A drop on 15 or 16 January reaches an empty flat in Chennai and misses the buyer entirely.
  • Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy and Salem are the obvious editions for Tamil Nadu. Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam carry Sankranti the same week in Telugu-speaking states, and Bangalore, Mysore and Hubli follow with Sankranti in Kannada.
  • Write in the language of the edition. Tamil, Telugu and Kannada dailies carry most Pongal and Sankranti readership, and festival copy translates badly from an English master. Our guide to writing insert copy in regional languages explains what to brief.
  • Appliance, gold, textile and two-wheeler retailers are the core advertisers, followed by sweet shops, saree showrooms and home improvement brands. Jewellers in particular treat Pongal as their January anchor, and a glossy A4 is the common format.
  • Special editions matter. Tamil and Telugu publishers bring out larger Pongal and Sankranti issues that stay in the house longer, as our Sunday supplements and special editions guide notes. Ask which date the festival special runs and whether the insert can ride in it.

Our Chennai insertion page lists the editions and localities we work with in the city, and the same rate card applies as everywhere else.

How do Republic Day sales work for electronics and furniture retailers?

Republic Day has become the first national retail event of the calendar year. In 2026, the two largest online marketplaces opened their Republic Day sales on 16 and 17 January with early access for members a day earlier, and offline electronics chains, regional appliance retailers and furniture showrooms ran their own Republic Day sales across the same ten days (our electronics and appliance retailer inserts guide covers what a Republic Day price-list sheet should carry). The pattern has repeated for several years and there is no reason to expect 2027 to differ, though the exact dates are announced only in early January.

For a local retailer, the competition in that week is the online marketplaces' bank offers. The insert has to answer the question a household asks at breakfast: why buy from you rather than from an app? The answers that work on a sheet are same-day delivery and installation, exchange of the old unit, in-store finance with a named bank, extended warranty, and the ability to see and touch the product. Print those, not the discount percentage alone.

Timing for 2027:

  1. First drop on Saturday 16 or Sunday 17 January, the weekend after Pongal and Sankranti, when the online sales open and households are comparing prices.
  2. Second drop on Saturday 23 or Sunday 24 January, the weekend before Republic Day itself, for a dated "sale ends 26 January" message.
  3. Furniture and mattress showrooms can use the same two weekends. Many families who completed a griha pravesh after Sankranti are furnishing in the second half of January, and the Republic Day sale gives them a reason to decide. Our furniture and mattress showroom inserts guide covers what the room-set price sheet should carry.

When is the school admissions rush, and how should schools time inserts?

The admissions rush runs under the whole window. For most CBSE and state board schools, the new academic session begins in April, and admissions for nursery, KG, Class 1 and lateral entry open between December and February. Delhi is the clearest published example: the Directorate of Education's schedule for 2026-27 opened applications for open seats at private schools on 4 December 2025, closed them on 27 December 2025 and published the first selection list on 23 January 2026. Other cities follow their own state rules, and many schools in Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune start their process in November or December with lists in January and February.

For a school, that means the December drop is the one that fills the application pool, and the January drop is for families whose first choice did not come through. Our schools and coaching institutes guide covers the catchment and fee-transparency questions in detail. The timing points specific to this window are:

  • Drop one in the first weekend of December, before Kharmas matters and before the Christmas break scatters families, so that parents can visit the school before applications close.
  • Drop two in the second or third week of January, when first lists are out and parents whose child was not selected are looking at other schools in the catchment. This is the drop most schools skip and most should not.
  • Coaching institutes work the other way round. Their January intake is for the next board cycle and the April to June entrance batches, and the Republic Day week, when students are at home and results of pre-boards are in hand, is a strong drop for them.
  • Pre-schools and playschools can drop on Saturday 2 or Sunday 3 January, when New Year planning is in the air and parents of toddlers are deciding on the April start.

Our Delhi insertion page covers the editions and localities for the capital, where admissions timing is most tightly regulated and most parents compare several schools in one district.

What does a December to January insert plan cost?

Rates are the same in every week of the window and in every city: A2 ₹2.00, A4 ₹1.50 and A5 ₹1.20 per copy, all-inclusive of printing, insertion and transport, GST extra, with a minimum of 50,000 copies per drop. The current figures are on our pricing page. A plan for this window is therefore a question of how many drops and which format, not of seasonal surcharges.

Example December to January plans at published rates
PlanFormat and copiesCost before GST
Restaurant Christmas weekend, one locality clusterA5, 50,000 copies₹60,000
Pongal appliance sale, one dropA4, 75,000 copies₹1,12,500
School admissions, two dropsA4, 2 × 50,000 copies₹1,50,000
Republic Day electronics, two dropsA4, 2 × 75,000 copies₹2,25,000
Wedding categories, post-Kharmas dropA4 glossy, 50,000 copies₹75,000

For most of these briefs an A4 insertion is the right format, because the sheet has to carry prices, dates and a map. A restaurant menu offer or a gym membership can work on A5. Our guide to A2 vs A4 vs A5 inserts covers the trade-offs.

How far ahead should each drop be booked?

Work back from the drop date using our seven-day campaign timeline. For metro editions in the busiest weeks, the practical lead times are longer than a week:

  • Christmas and New Year drops need artwork approved by around 12 December, because printers close early for the holidays and the second half of December is a heavy insertion period for retail.
  • Pongal and Sankranti drops on 9 and 10 January need artwork approved in the last week of December. Printers in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh themselves take Pongal holidays, so any slippage pushes the drop past the festival.
  • Republic Day drops on 16 and 17 January are the most crowded weekend of the month for electronics inserts in the metros. Book the dates in the first week of January.
  • Post-Kharmas wedding and property drops are flexible by comparison. A brief in the second week of January can still make the weekend of 23 and 24 January.

A reader's paper on a busy weekend may carry several inserts. Our guide on how many inserts share your delivery day explains how to ask about the load and whether a Friday or a mid-week drop avoids it.

What mistakes do advertisers make in this window?

  • Treating December to January as one campaign. A single "season offer" sheet dropped on 20 December is too late for Christmas travel, too early for Pongal, irrelevant to Republic Day and lands in Kharmas for wedding buyers.
  • Printing a Sankranti date without checking the panchang. Calendars differ between 14 and 15 January in 2027. Print "Sankranti week" or the sale dates, not the festival date, unless you have confirmed it for your readers' region.
  • Dropping Pongal offers on Pongal. Readers have left for their native places. The buying happens the week before.
  • Ignoring Kharmas in the North, or assuming it applies in the South. Wedding and housewarming categories wait until mid-January in the Hindi belt. In Tamil Nadu it is Margazhi that matters, and in Kerala, Goa and the Northeast Christian weddings cluster around Christmas and New Year.
  • Competing with online sales on discount alone. Delivery, installation, exchange and finance are the reasons a household walks into a store in Republic Day week. Print them.
  • Skipping the January admissions drop. Families whose first-choice school did not come through are the easiest admissions a school will make all year, and most schools do not advertise to them.

Where do these dates and figures come from?

Festival dates are from Drik Panchang's 2027 listings for Makar Sankranti and Thai Pongal and its Sankranti calendar for Dhanu Sankranti 2026, cross-checked against the civil calendar for Christmas, New Year's Day and Republic Day. The Delhi nursery admission schedule is the Directorate of Education's published 2026-27 timeline as reported by Careers360. The 2026 Republic Day online sale dates are from Amazon India's own announcement and contemporaneous reporting on Flipkart's sale. Rates are the agency's published all-inclusive rates. Category timing and drop-day advice are planning guidance from our own 500+ insertion campaigns across 30+ Indian cities since 2020, not a measured industry benchmark. For how many households a given edition reaches, rely on Audit Bureau of Circulations certified circulation for the specific edition and the Indian Readership Survey from MRUC for readership context.
