The Short Answer

A hardware, paint, tiles, sanitaryware or building-material dealer sells to households in the months they build or renovate, and those households are concentrated in a few pin codes: new colonies, plotted layouts and older neighbourhoods being rebuilt. The insert that works is a priced A4 catalogue sheet dropped into those pin codes before the building season peaks. At ₹1.50 per copy, 50,000 copies cost ₹75,000 plus GST.

Key Takeaways

  • A house owner who is building or renovating decides on cement, steel, tiles, paint and fittings at home, often with the family, before the contractor places the order. The insert reaches that decision.
  • Building runs in the dry months. Plan a post-Diwali renovation drop on Saturday 21 or Sunday 22 November 2026, a new-construction drop on Saturday 16 or Sunday 17 January 2027, just after Makar Sankranti, and a pre-monsoon waterproofing drop on Saturday 1 or Sunday 2 May 2027.
  • Fill the run from the pin codes where houses are actually going up: new colonies, plotted layouts, extension areas and older localities where independent houses are rebuilt.
  • The sheet that works carries the brands you stock, prices per bag, per square foot or per litre with a date, a WhatsApp number for the day's rate, delivery terms and your address. Print only BIS and brand-dealer claims you can show.
  • Fifty thousand A4 copies cost ₹75,000 plus GST. On the general 0.5 to 2 percent response band we observe, that is 250 to 1,000 enquiries, or ₹75 to ₹300 per enquiry, against a single house's materials bill that runs into lakhs.

Why do building-material dealers suit newspaper inserts?

A cement bag or a box of tiles is not an impulse purchase, and it is rarely chosen by the mason alone. The household building a house or redoing a bathroom spends weeks comparing brands, prices and shades, and much of that comparing happens at the breakfast table. Three traits make the category a good fit for an insert.

The customer is a house owner, at home. A newspaper is read in the house that is being built, extended or repainted. A builder of a single house is often called an individual house builder in the trade, and that person, not a developer's purchase department, signs the cheque. Our guide to newspaper inserts for B2B and trade audiences covers reaching contractors and masons; this guide is about the owner.

Demand sits in a few pin codes. New construction concentrates in plotted layouts, new colonies and extension areas on a city's edge, while renovation concentrates in older neighbourhoods of independent houses. A newspaper vendor network delivers by pin code, which is why our pin-code targeting guide suits a dealer far better than a whole-city edition.

The sheet is a price list the family keeps. A priced catalogue sheet goes into the folder with the plan and the contractor's estimate. When the order is placed weeks later, the dealer whose prices are on the table is the dealer who gets the first call.

Across the campaigns we have run since 2020 in 30+ cities, the dealer sheets that worked were the ones that looked like a price list, not an advertisement: brands, sizes, prices and a phone number, with nothing decorative in the way.

When should a hardware, paint or tiles dealer drop an insert?

Building in most of India slows in the monsoon, when wet sites, delayed curing and closed roads hold work back, and picks up in the dry months that follow. Within that, each trade has its own peak.

Renovation and repainting: after Diwali. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. Pre-festival painting has already been booked by the time you read this on 1 November 2026, but many families wait until after the festival and the first wedding dates to start bathroom, kitchen and flooring work. A drop on Saturday 21 or Sunday 22 November 2026 reaches them as they plan. Tiles, sanitaryware, modular kitchen fittings and paint all belong on this sheet. Our festival-season planning guide covers how crowded the pre-Diwali mornings get.

New construction: after Makar Sankranti. In many north Indian families, new construction, the foundation ceremony and other auspicious work wait until kharmas ends with Makar Sankranti in mid-January 2027. January to March is also the dry stretch when slabs are cast before the summer heat. A drop on Saturday 16 or Sunday 17 January 2027 lands as those families start buying. Cement, TMT steel, bricks, sand and plumbing pipes lead this sheet.

Waterproofing and roofing: before the monsoon. Leaks are remembered in the rains but fixed before them. A drop on Saturday 1 or Sunday 2 May 2027 in north and west India, and two weeks earlier in Kerala and the south-west, catches households fixing terraces and walls ahead of the first rain. Our monsoon insertion guide covers the rain-season side of waterproofing.

Our guide to how often to repeat a newspaper insertion explains why three timed drops in a year do more for a dealer than one large one.

Which pin codes should a building-material dealer cover?

The 50,000-copy minimum per run is large for a single counter, so the run has to be built around where houses are going up within your delivery range.

  • Start from your free-delivery radius. Cement, steel and tiles are heavy and delivery cost decides the deal. List the pin codes you deliver to at the price you print, and fill the run from those outward. Our minimum order guide explains how the floor is counted per run.
  • Favour plotted layouts and extension areas for new construction. These are the localities where open plots are being built on, and where the owner buys material directly.
  • Favour older independent-house localities for renovation. Owners of twenty- and thirty-year-old houses are the ones redoing bathrooms, floors and terraces. Gated apartment societies are weaker for structural material but can be strong for paint and fittings.
  • Several non-competing dealers can share a run. A tiles showroom, a paint dealer, a plumbing and sanitaryware store and an electrical shop on the same road can split an A4 sheet as a "build your home" directory. Our guide to shared and co-branded insert runs explains how.

Edition choice follows the person who signs. In Lucknow, Jaipur or Indore that usually means the Hindi daily, and in Pune or Ahmedabad often the Marathi or Gujarati one. Our English versus vernacular guide covers splitting a run.

What should a building-material dealer's sheet carry?

In order of size:

  1. The brands you stock and your prices. "Tiles from ₹45 per square foot", "Exterior emulsion, 20 litres, price on the sheet", "TMT bars, price per kilogram on WhatsApp". These are examples of the form, not quoted market rates. Paint and tiles can carry printed prices with a validity date. Cement and steel prices move often, so print the brands and say "today's rate on WhatsApp" rather than a price you will have to refuse in a week.
  2. The WhatsApp and phone numbers, large. Most buyers will send a photo of a plan or a bathroom and ask for a quote, so make WhatsApp the first route.
  3. Delivery terms. Free delivery within a stated distance, unloading included or extra, and the minimum order. These lines decide whether the call turns into an order.
  4. A reason to visit this month. A shade card offer, a free site measurement for tiles, or a season price with an end date.
  5. Your address and hours. Building buyers visit the counter before they order, so a landmark and a map QR matter.

Then the lines that keep the sheet honest:

  • Print BIS claims only for products that carry the mark. Cement and steel reinforcement bars are among the products that must carry the BIS standard mark under the quality control orders issued by the government. If your sheet says "ISI marked", the product in your yard must bear it.
  • Never call yourself an authorised dealer unless the brand has appointed you. Using a brand's logo or the word "authorised" without its permission is a trade mark problem under the Trade Marks Act, 1999 and a misleading claim under the Central Consumer Protection Authority's 2022 guidelines.
  • Packaged goods follow the Legal Metrology rules. A printed price for a paint tin or a bag of tile adhesive must not exceed the MRP declared on the pack under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
  • State every offer's conditions, and substantiate performance claims. "Up to 30 percent off" and "10-year waterproofing guarantee" need their conditions on the sheet under the CCPA 2022 guidelines, and the Advertising Standards Council of India's code expects you to be able to back any performance claim.

Our insert artwork checklist covers the file specifications.

Which format suits a building-material dealer?

What does a dealer's campaign cost, and what response can it bring?

The all-inclusive rates on our pricing page cover printing, insertion and transport: A2 at ₹2.00, A4 at ₹1.50 and A5 at ₹1.20 per copy, with a 50,000-copy minimum per run and GST extra. One A4 drop of 50,000 copies costs ₹75,000 plus GST. The three-drop year above costs ₹2,25,000 plus GST.

No response benchmark for building-material dealers is published in India, and we do not have one to offer. The general band we observe across campaigns with a clear offer is 0.5 to 2 percent of inserted copies producing a direct response. The planning scenarios for one 50,000-copy A4 drop are:

Planning scenarios for one 50,000-copy A4 drop (₹75,000 plus GST)
ResponseEnquiries from the sheetCost per enquiry
0.5 percent250₹300
1 percent500₹150
2 percent1,000₹75

Scenarios on the agency's general 0.5 to 2 percent response band; not a category benchmark. Count enquiries for three months after the drop.

The enquiry is small next to the order. One house's cement, steel, tiles, paint and fittings run into lakhs of rupees, so a handful of converted builds can carry the whole season. Our cost per lead calculation guide shows how to measure against order value rather than enquiry count.

How do you measure response to a dealer's insert?

  • Give the sheet its own WhatsApp number, so every quote request from the insert is counted. Our missed call and WhatsApp guide covers set-up.
  • Ask every counter visitor where they heard of you and write it in the order book.
  • Print a code per drop and pin-code cluster. Our coupon inserts guide covers coding by area.
  • Count for three months. Building buyers order weeks after they compare.
  • Check delivery first with the newspaper insert distribution certificate.

What goes wrong with building-material inserts?

  1. A brand-logo collage with no prices. The family cannot compare it with anything, so it does not go into the folder.
  2. A printed cement price that changes before the order arrives. Print the brands and a WhatsApp rate line instead.
  3. Apartment pin codes for structural material. Flat owners rarely buy cement and steel; keep those runs for plotted layouts and independent houses.
  4. Dropping during the monsoon, when building has stopped and the sheet is forgotten before work restarts.
  5. "Authorised dealer" or "ISI marked" claims you cannot show. Each is a legal risk and a lost customer.
  6. Free delivery to the whole city. Promise the radius you can serve at the printed price.

Our common newspaper insertion mistakes guide covers the errors shared by every category, and our furniture and mattress showroom guide covers the purchase that often follows a finished house.

Building-material dealer insert checklist

  1. Plan the drops: Saturday 21 or Sunday 22 November 2026 for renovation, Saturday 16 or Sunday 17 January 2027 for new construction, Saturday 1 or Sunday 2 May 2027 for waterproofing.
  2. List the pin codes inside your delivery radius where houses are being built or rebuilt.
  3. Print brands, dated prices or a WhatsApp rate line, delivery terms and your address.
  4. Make only BIS, dealer and performance claims you can show.
  5. Choose A4 for a catalogue, A5 for a single offer.
  6. Give the sheet its own number or code and count for three months.
